Earthwork is officially complete at the Mound City TA Travel Center, and the MCON Underground team has moved into the next major phase of the project. Our crews are now installing all storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water utilities across the site in Mound City, Missouri. This marks an important transition from shaping the land to building the systems that will keep the future travel center running every day. It is a big step forward for the project and for the community that will soon benefit from it.
From Finished Grade to Underground Infrastructure
Reaching this point took months of heavy lifting on a site spanning roughly 17 acres. Over the summer, our team brought in and placed more than 35,000 cubic yards of offsite fill to build up and level the property. Every load was graded and compacted to meet the project’s engineering specifications so the ground can support the structures, fuel areas, and truck traffic to come. With the pad now at finished grade, the site is ready for trenching and pipe installation. Completing earthwork first allows utility lines to be set at precise depths and elevations without disturbing the prepared subgrade. This careful sequencing helps keep the overall schedule on track and gives the trades who follow us a solid, stable site to work from.
Storm Sewer, Sanitary Sewer, and Water Utilities
A travel center depends on reliable underground systems, and this phase covers all three of the major ones. The storm sewer network will collect runoff from paved surfaces and carry it safely away from buildings and parking areas, helping prevent flooding and erosion. Our storm work typically involves PVC, HDPE, and concrete pipe, along with structures such as manholes and junction boxes, all selected to match the project design. The sanitary sewer system will serve restrooms, showers, food service, and other facilities that travelers and drivers rely on around the clock. New water lines will supply the domestic water and fire protection the building needs to operate safely. Installing all three systems as a coordinated package lets us manage depths, crossings, and connections efficiently while reducing conflicts between lines.
Building Value for Mound City and the I-29 Corridor
Mound City sits right along Interstate 29, a key north and south route through northwest Missouri. A full service TA Travel Center in this location will give truck drivers and travelers a modern place to stop for fuel, food, and rest. The project also brings construction jobs now and permanent jobs once the doors open. As a family owned contractor based just across the state line in Wathena, Kansas, MCON takes pride in helping bring this kind of investment to a rural community in our region. Projects like this strengthen local economies and support the trucking industry that keeps goods moving across the Midwest. We are proud to play a part in laying the groundwork for a facility that will serve the area for decades.
